Fermented Honey Garlic

Fermented honey garlic is one of the best things you can make to help support your immune system, especially during winter. Honey and garlic both have many benefits by themselves, so they are really effective when combined. Honey is rich in antioxidants, lower on the glycemic index scale (which is better for blood sugar) helps coat the throat in both adults and children, and can even be used topically for burns and wounds. Garlic is known for the positive effects it has on the body, and it maintains healthy immune function, blood sugar, and cholesterol. Fermented honey garlic can be eaten straight from the jar or can even be incorporated into dishes for good flavor!

Equipment:

  • Pint Mason Jar
  • Toothpick

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup whole garlic cloves peeled
  • 1 cup raw honey (or more to cover garlic)

Directions:

  1. Peel off the skins of the garlic cloves and carefully prick holes with a toothpick in each piece of garlic.
  2. Pour honey over garlic until it is fully submerged. Make sure all cloves of garlic are fully coated.
  3. Place the lid on the jar loosely and put it in a safe place.
  4. The honey garlic needs to be fermented for a month but can be eaten any time before then. It is recommended to wait until it is fully fermented, though.

Tips:

Make sure to tighten the lid daily and flip over the jar to coat the garlic with the honey. Loosen the lid again when putting it back.

Make sure to check on your jar daily to prevent gas buildup.

Place a plate underneath the jar to avoid honey dripping out onto the table.

Make sure to use raw honey to get the best results.

Studies have shown that fermenting garlic can increase the number of nutrients in it and make it easier to absorb by the body. If you ferment for 90 days or more, you will get the most benefits out of it. Fermented honey garlic can be stored for as long as you’d like though! The more it sits, the more the flavor develops. Finding natural ways to support your immune system is very important. There are so many easy natural recipes you can make at home to help support your body. I found this recipe on the internet and had to try it myself. My honey garlic has been fermenting for a couple of months now! I was already excited about fermenting something since I’d never done it before, but after reading up on all the health benefits, I was even more excited to make it. It’s fun to make something new, and it’s super rewarding when it will also help your body. Don’t be afraid to try new things! Happy fermenting!
