Samskaras

Samskaras

Samskaras are deeply ingrained impressions, habits, or patterns that shape our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. In Sanskrit, “samskara” means “mental impression” or “imprint” and in Eastern philosophies, they represent the subconscious residues of past experiences and actions. These energetic imprints accumulate over time, becoming blockages that hinder your flow of energy, or chi, and influence how we respond to life, often without us realizing it. As Michael Singer (2013) writes in The Untethered Soul, “This packet of cycling energy is literally stored in your energetic heart center. All the Samskaras you have collected over your life are stored there” (pg 54). (This book is an excellent source of information!)

A common analogy is that a samskara is like a seed planted in the mind and/or heart, shaped by our experiences, actions, emotions, and thoughts. When nurtured, they grow into automatic tendencies and habits that can be either limiting or positive. Negative samskaras, formed by trauma or negative conditioning, may manifest as fears or anxieties. Conversely, positive samskaras, formed by love, wisdom, or kindness, can cultivate compassion, resilience, and patience.

When you are not conscious of the samskaras, they govern your actions. When you become conscious of them, you realize that you can release them. This is key to healing: letting go of old, limiting patterns. Clinging to past experiences, even unconsciously, keeps us trapped in cycles of reactivity. By becoming aware of our samskaras, we can consciously choose to release them.

Samskaras do not have to remain permanent; they offer opportunities for growth! We free ourselves from their hold by practicing mindfulness and learning to release old impressions. Through this process, we can create space for new positive patterns. When we stop clinging to the past, we allow ourselves to evolve into the best versions of ourselves.
