What is a B Corp?

What is a B Corp?

Have you ever noticed this Certified B Corporation (B Corp) logo on various products? This small but powerful "B" is more than just a symbol—it’s a badge of honor. Companies that display it must meet rigorous and ongoing standards to earn and maintain their B Corp certification.

What is a B Corp?

A B Corporation (B Corp) is a business that meets the highest standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. The nonprofit organization B Lab certifies B Corps who balance profit with purpose, ensuring that there is a positive impact on workers, communities, and the environment. Unlike traditional corporations that prioritize shareholder profits over all else, B Corps focus on using core principles that focus on people, the planet, and profit to create long-term value for all.

How to Become a B Corp?

To become a B Corp, a company must undergo a rigorous assessment process and commit to continuous improvement. Here is what it takes:

  1. They must complete the B Impact Assessment that measures a company's impact in five key categories: Governance, Workers, Community, Environment, and Customers.
  2. They must score at least 80 points on the assessment.
  3. They must amend their legal structure to reflect a commitment to stakeholders not just shareholders.
  4. They must undergo recertification every three years to ensure ongoing compliance and improvement.
  5. A B Corp must also publish an impact report making their social and environmental performance publicly available to ensure accountability and help build consumer trust.

The B Corp Movement includes thousands of companies worldwide from small startups to major corporations like Patagonia. By certifying as a B Corp, the company joins a community dedicated to using business as a force for good
