There’s no better feeling than walking into your granny’s kitchen and smelling the heartwarming scent of cheese pie! This cheese pie is one of Serbia’s favorite go-to homemade foods, and for good reason! Of course, every household, every granny and mom, has their way of making it, but the principle is the same. Here is how I make it, how older generations taught me, and how I shall one day pass it down to my kids. The best part about this recipe is that it’s fun to involve kids of all ages!
Ingredients:
- One pack of phyllo pastry (usually this is about 1lb)
- 1lb of white mature cheese, feta or the like (it should be a salty cheese)
- 2 tbsp cream cheese
- 4-5 eggs
- 1 cup sparkling water
- 1 cup oil
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- Sesame seeds (optional)
Directions:
Grease your baking tray and preheat the oven. Mix all the ingredients except the pastry in a bowl (you can crumble the white cheese into chunks). Now, the fun part! One by one, crumple each sheet of phyllo into the mix and place it in the pan until you run out of mixture or phyllo (if you have some leftover blend, pour it over the top of the pie). Sprinkle some sesame seeds on top and bake at 350F until you get a crispy-looking crust! Once it’s ready, be careful not to burn your tongue because it will be hard to resist, so wait for it to cool down!
