As a young adult, I loved listening to Art Bell's radio show on my way home late at night after work. For several years, a guest on the show was Mike Marcum. He claimed to know how to build a time machine.
Tongue in cheek, I listened to him talk with Bell. It is an exciting story that has come up again in social media and other outlets, and so far, there has been no definitive ending.
The time frame is in the mid-1990s. Marcum, with no accredited higher education, was a well-known tinkerer. The story is that he had built a Jacobs ladder from old parts and thought he could create a powerful magnetic field with a much larger transformer. Marcum made a transformer and enclosed the project to heat the surrounding air. He said he could see an orb of distorted air above the project when he did this. So he did what any person would do and tossed a screw into the orb. He noted that the screw would come out of the orb with a tiny bit of a delay. He needed to go bigger. So, he stole a large transformer from a job site in the area where he lived. He was later caught for the crime and was in jail for 60 days. After being released, he told Bell he would do it legally.
He needed help. Bell claimed that scientists, intrigued by Marcum's theory, had reached out, offering their assistance. Together, they constructed a new device, and after rigorous testing, Marcum decided to become the subject of his experiment and put himself into the orb. The result - he claimed to have found himself 800 miles away and two years into the future. Not long after that, he did it again, and according to Bell and others, he has been missing since. This is a fun story with many more tests and details if you look into it. Enjoy!
