Little Free Pantry: Take What You Need, Leave What You Can
You may have heard of Little Free Library - Melissa wrote on this in a previous edition. In that same vein, Little Free Pantry is a community-based Mutual Aid project that aims to fight food insecurity and meet basic needs in our neighborhoods.
What is Little Free Pantry? Just like Little Free Library, pantry keepers can install a DIY pantry box on a post in their yard or other community space, and fill it with shelf-stable items. Things like shelf-stable foods, toiletries, paper goods, school supplies, band-aids, first aid, etc, are all great choices.
Optionally, it can be registered on https://mapping.littlefreepantry.org/ - and added to the great map of pantries and fridges. The philosophy is “Take what you need, leave what you can”.
Like many Americans, I have faced food insecurity and struggled to get my basic needs met when I was entering adulthood.
Sometimes it’s hard to know how to get help, and it’s also hard to ask for it.
Little Free Pantry presents an opportunity for people facing a variety of struggles to get basic amenities without having to ask and without having another person determine what they can and cannot take. It is accessible and builds community compassion and connection. We are all neighbors.
If you are interested in Little Free Pantry but cannot host one yourself, consider taking a trip around your area now and then, perhaps help stock the pantries in your community.
