Whether you drizzle it over pancakes, add it to warm teas, or take it by the spoonful, elderberry syrup is a soothing, all-natural way to keep wellness close at hand. Here's how to make this simple, nourishing staple!

Here is a great and easy recipe. This syrup is wonderfully versatile and can be easily customized to suit your tastes and herbal needs.

Elderberry Syrup

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups water
  • 1 cup dried elderberries
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1’’ piece of ginger root
  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • 1 cup raw honey

Supplies:

  • Medium saucepan
  • Spoon
  • Fine mesh strainer
  • Jar or container for finished syrup

Directions:

  1. In saucepan combine all of the ingredients except the honey, and heat on medium heat until it starts to boil.
  2. Reduce heat to simmer and cover with a lid. Simmer for 1 hour stirring occasionally, until the syrup is reduced by about half.
  3. Remove from heat and allow to cool for 10-15 minutes.
  4. Pour the syrup through a strainer into a glass bowl. Use the back of a spoon to squeeze any remaining juice out and discard the berries.
  5. Allow the syrup to cool completely before whisking in the honey. Add the honey and stir until it dissolves.
  6. Pour the finished syrup into a jar with a lid and store in refrigerator for two weeks.
  7. For longer storage freeze in ice cube trays and thaw when needed.

Dosing:

  • Adults: 1 tbsp., up to four times per day
  • Children over 1year:  ½-1 tsp per day, up to 3 times per day
  • Not recommended for children under a year
