The Pineal Gland

the pineal gland

The pineal gland is a small endocrine gland, located deep in the center of the brain. About the size of a grain of rice, it is a reddish-gray color and is shaped like a pine cone, which is how it got its name. It produces melatonin, an important hormone that modulates sleep patterns.  Melatonin is stimulated by darkness and inhibited by light, which is why staring at your phone/tv/computer screen all night is not helping you sleep! A healthy pineal gland is essential for psychological development, peak physical performance, and even spiritual awakening.

Also known as the third eye, the pineal gland has long been revered as a powerful organ, capable of supreme universal connection. The third eye is connected to concentration, clarity, imagination, and intuition.  It is believed that by developing and opening the third eye chakra, one may gain a greater access to all things psychic.  Telepathy, clairvoyance, quality of sleep, lucid dreaming, aura viewing, and even astral projection are linked to the third eye.  While your physical eyes perceive the physical world, the third eye sees the true and spiritual world.

To awaken, purify, and nurture your pineal gland, there are several things you can start practicing. Try to avoid fluoride, which calcifies the gland and affects functioning.  Supplement your diet with whole, organic foods. Practice meditation, prayer, dance, yoga, or anything that helps you focus gratitude toward your third eye and feel connected with nature.  You can also incorporate crystals and essential oils.
